macOS Sierra can upgrade El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion. Open that app from your Applications folder to start installing the operating system.
The direct download (1.3GB) link is still working at this time. It will install an app named Install Version Name. The Combo updater should be available at this support page for direct download, but the page is presently not working. The Delta updater is a smaller download since it just includes the changes, while the Combo updater includes everything and weighs in at 1.3GB. The first is a security update for Snow Leopard, which applies similar security updates for its components that were applied to Lion in the OS X 10.7.4 update.
The different between the Delta and Combo updaters is normally just download size alone. It has been revealed that Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (the previous-generation Mac OS) users will be able to directly upgrade to Apple’s new generation operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. 9to5Mac notes that Apple has responded by pulling the Delta update altogether, leaving the Combo updater alone. Meanwhile, the crashing/CUI errors with 10.7.3 Delta updater has also been addressed by Apple. The new version seems to fix the PowerPC crashing issues described with the original update. Macworld notes that Apple has since released Security Update 2012-001, version 1.1 for Snow Leopard. It's the first major security update that Snow Leopard. The first was a Snow Leopard security update which inadvertently caused problems with Apple's PowerPC emulation layer Rosetta. When OS X 10.9.2 was released earlier this week, it was accompanied by security updates for OS X 10.8 and 10.7 but not for 2009's OS X 10.6.

Install any available updates for Snow Leopard, then restart your iMac. The download is 158MB and can be snagged by clicking the Apple logo in the Finder menu bar, and choosing 'Software update.' Or you can visit Apple's support downloads Web site and download the stand-alone installer. > Start at the Apple menu > Software Update. Unfortunately though, the bug where right-clicking fails to display context menus properly for items in Finder has not been fixed. We installed the patch this morning on a 2008 unibody MacBook and can report no issues with the process. A fair amount of OS X Snow Leopard users have held off on upgrading to OS X Lion, but with the release of Mountain Lion around the corner it’s quite likely a lot of OS X 10.6.8 holdouts will jump directly to OS X 10.8 if it is possible. As long as youre running the most up-to-date Snow Leopard version (10.6.8), you can directly upgrade to Mountain Lion, as detailed on Apples 10.8 Upgrade Page. But without the occasional software patches from Apple, bugs and security. According to the release notes, it fixes a number of key problems within the OS, including the much-whined about guest account data-deletion issue. Snow Leopard users don't have to upgrade - Macs running Mac OS X 10.6 will keep working without upgrading to Mavericks. Go to the Applications folder and open App Store. Apple has pushed out an update to OS X Snow Leopard, moving the version to 10.6.2. If you wish to upgrade FROM Snow Leopard, make sure you are running OS 10.6.8.
